5th Wiltshire (Devizes) Rifle Volunteers Officer’s Waist Belt Clasp c.1860 - 1880, an extremely fine and rare example in gilt and silver plate, the clasp of variable 1855 pattern and displaying in the centre in silver a shield bearing the arms of Devizes, per pale goules and azure a six sided castle shown in perspective, the port flanked by two domed towers each bearing a standard (these should be estoiles), below the shield ‘1860’, laurel sprays on the gilt surround and acanthus leaf supporters, matching benchmarks 44, very fine condition £200-300
Note: The 5th Devizes RVs were raised in 1860 becoming part of the 2nd Administrative Battalion; a clasp of this opulence possibly indicates use for the Commanding Officer or for use at Annual Reviews.
