Herbert Allan Bedford commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 10th (Reserve) battalion Royal Lancaster Regiment on 3 January 1915. Landing in France on 20 August 1915, he joined the 1/5th (T.F.) Battalion at Kemmel on 25 August. After a brief appearance with the battalion at the battle of Loos, Bedford was transferred in October to the 2nd Battalion which soon went with the 28th Division to Salonika where it remained until the end of the war. Immediately after the war, the much reduced battalion then went on to serve in Bulgaria and Turkey. Bedford is named on the roll of honour of Richard Haworth & Co. Ltd., Dale Street, Manchester. During W.W.2 he held a Regular Army Emergency Commission in the R.A.S.C., ending the war as a War Substantive Lieutenant, Acting Captain.
