William James was born in Shaftsbury, Dorset. He enlisted at Dorchester on 30 December 1851, aged 18 years. Served in the Crimea, 1855-56; Mauritius, July-September 1857; India, 1857-60; Aden, 1860-61. Discharged in England on completing his service on 8 May 1862.
