James McBrine was born in Devenish, near Enniskillen, Ireland. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 1/4th Regiment at Enniskillen on 11 February 1845, aged 18 years. He served overseas in the East Indies for 10 years, 3 months; in Malta, Turkey and the Crimea for 1 year, 5 months and in Mauritius for 1 year 5 months. Awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. with a gratuity of £5 in 1865. Discharged to a pension on 10 March 1866, his intended place of residence being Bombay.
