William Garside was born in Middleton, Lancashire. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers (Militia), he attested for the Royal Lancaster Regiment at Manchester on 4 July 1892, aged 18 years, 2 months. Served in Malta, September 1895-November 1897; Hong Kong, November 1897-January 1899; Singapore, January 1899-March 1900, and South Africa, January 1901-December 1902. Served in the 16th Battalion Mounted Infantry in South Africa. Promoted Sergeant in May 1896, he attained the rank of Colour Sergeant in September 1902. He was discharged by purchase on 8 December 1902. Garside died in the Randfontein Hospital on 11 March 1904. His obituary in The Middleton Guardian of 9 April 1904, states that ‘at the close of the war he left the army in favour of an important position at the gold mines, which he occupied up to the time of his death’. He was buried in the Krugersdorp Cemetery.
