Ernest Hawkins was born in Kidderminster, Worcestershire. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Wiltshire Regiment at Newport, Monmouthshire, on 20 September 1892, aged 19 years, 9 months. With the 2nd Battalion he served in India, February 1894-November 1895. Gained his Mounted Infantry Certificate in 1895. Hawkins transferred to the Army Reserve in September 1899 but was soon recalled, serving in South Africa, March 1900-July 1901. Transferred to the 2nd Mounted Infantry on 2 November 1900. He was discharged as medically unfit on 27 August 1901. With copied service papers and roll extract.
