James Cooney was born in Bromley, Stratford, Middlesex. As a member of the 3rd Battalion Royal Fusiliers (Militia), he attested for regular service with the Essex Regiment at West Ham on 11 December 1890, aged 18 years, 6 months. With the 2nd Battalion he served in India, February 1893-December 1898, being transferred to the Army Reserve in December 1898. He was recalled to the Colours in November 1899 and with the 1st Battalion served in South Africa, November 1899-June 1902. He was discharged having completed his period of service on 16 July 1902. With copied service papers and Q.S.A. roll extract.
