John Campbell Greig was born in Dundee, Scotland. A Carter by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Royal Highlanders (Militia), he attested for regular service at Dundee on 19 March 1895, aged 18 years, 8 months. With the 1st Battalion he served in India, October 1896-December 1901 and in South Africa, December 1901-October 1902. Transferred to the Army Reserve in November 1902 and discharged on 18 March 1907. With copied service papers.
