John Oliver was born in Shaldon, Hampshire. A Carter by occupation, he attested for the Hampshire Regiment at Winchester on 3 February 1891, aged 18 years, 2 months. With the regiment he served in India, February 1893-December 1898. Transferred to the Army Reserve in December 1898, he was recalled to the Colours in August 1899 and served in South Africa, January 1900-October 1901. He was discharged having been found medically unfit on 24 April 1902. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
