Henry Deacon was born in Walcot, Bath, Somerset. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Gloucestershire Regiment at Bristol on 30 January 1893, aged 18 years, 7 months. Was convicted by the civil powers and imprisoned for a short time in May 1893. Served with the regiment in Malta, November 1893-October 1895; Cyprus, October 1895-November 1896; Egypt, November 1896-February 1897; India, February 1897-December 1899; South Africa, December 1899-August 1900, and Ceylon, August 1900-December 1902. Transferred to the Army Reserve in June 1903; re-attested in the Reserve in March 1905. Serving in the Great War as Private 11907 in the 1st Battalion South Wales Borderers, he was killed in action, France/Flanders, on 21 October 1914. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. With copied service papers, roll extract, casualty details and m.i.c.
