James Green was born in Liverpool. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Liverpool Regiment at Liverpool on 3 August 1892, aged 19 years. He had an eventful service, being convicted by court martial for losing his equipment in December 1894; convicted by the civil power for damage and assault in May 1896; convicted by court martial in May 1897 for breaking out of barracks and losing his equipment, and convicted by court martial in October 1898 for drunkenness. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in August 1899 but recalled to the Colours in November. With the regiment he served in South Africa, January 1900-August 1902, being taken prisoner at Helvetia, 29 December 1900 but later released. Awarded the Queen’s medal with three clasps and the King’s medal with two. With copied service papers and roll extract.
