John Cruise was born in Preston, Lancashire. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Royal Lancaster Regiment (Militia), he attested for regular service with the regiment at Lancaster on 18 March 1892, aged 18 years. With the regiment he served in India, February 1894-February 1896; Malta, February 1896-November 1897; Hong Kong, November 1897-January 1899; Singapore, January 1899-March 1900 and South Africa, January 1901-August 1902. With copied service papers and roll extract.
