As a Gunner in the Southern Division, R.A., he deserted, 30 December 1890-25 September 1891; he was subsequently imprisoned for 42 days. In September 1892 he transferred to the 2nd Battalion Royal Lancaster Regiment. Lambert served overseas in India, March 1892-February 1896; Malta, February 1896-July 1897 and South Africa, December 1899-August 1902.
