Henry Arnold was born in Eastbourne, Sussex. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment (Militia), he attested for the Coldstream Guards at Chichester on 26 July 1890, aged 20 years, 3 months. After service in the U.K. he was transferred to the Army Reserve in July 1897. Recalled in October 1899, he served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa, October 1899-March 1900, seeing action at Belmont, Modder River, and probably Magersfontein. Posted to the 3rd Battalion in March 1900, he was re-transferred to the Army Reserve in May 1902 and discharged in July. With copied service papers and roll extract.
