Edmond Charles Culpeck was born at Marylebone, London. A Sawyer by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Royal Fusiliers, he attested for General Service Cavalry at Hounslow on 10 November 1885, aged 18 years, 10 months. Posted to the 8th Hussars, he served in India, December 1886-November 1889. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in November 1892 and was discharged on 9 November 1897. Then aged 33 years, 5 months, he re-enlisted for one year’s service in the Hussars of the Line, at London on 17 May 1900. Posted to the 7th Hussars, he served until his discharge on 16 May 1901. He re-enlisted once more on 10 April 1901 and was posted to the 10th Hussars. With them he served in South Africa, June 1901-September 1902 and in India, September 1902-March 1906. Corporal Culpeck of the 10th Hussars was finally discharged on 10 January 1908. His intended place of residence was stated to be ‘7 Ambrose Street, Fulford Road, York.’
