James Bushnell was born in Chelsea, London. A Farrier by occupation, he attested for the 10th Hussars on 23 June 1891. After service at home he was transferred to the Army Reserve in June 1898. Recalled to the Colours in November 1899, he served in South Africa, November 1899-July 1900 and January 1901-July 1902, for which he was awarded the Queen’s and King’s medals, each with two clasps. With copied service notes.
