Joseph Winter was born in Crondall, Farnham, Hampshire. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Corps of Dragoons of the Line at Aldershot on 15 February 1895, aged 19 years, 4 months. Posted to the Royal Scots Greys, he served in South Africa, November 1899-August 1900 and again from October 1900 to January 1903. Transferred to the Army Reserve in February 1903 and discharged on 12 February 1907. With copied service papers and roll extracts. The K.S.A. roll, dated Steenbosch, 9 March 1903, lists him as being invalided.
