William Richard Standen was born in Ewell, Surrey. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Dragoons of the Line at London on 23 August 1899, aged 18 years, 5 months. Posted to the 2nd Dragoon Guards, he served in South Africa, November 1901-February 1905. Transferred to the Army Reserve in February 1905, he was discharged having completed his service in August 1911. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
