Ernest Walter Dibbell was born in Harrow, Middlesex in March 1877. Serving with the 1st Life Guards during the Boer War, he was taken prisoner at Sannah’s Post, 31 March 1900 but was later released when Pretoria was taken. As a Saddle Staff Corporal, 1st Life Guards, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 15 August 1914. The unit, part of the 7th Cavalry Brigade, served in the retreat from Mons and the advance to the Aisne, capturing the village of Mont-des-Cats, 12 October 1914. Dibbell was discharged on 26 January 1920.

Only 20 ‘Belfast’ clasps to the regiment. Two officers and 17 other ranks of the regiment were taken prisoner at Sannah’s Post. With copied m.i.c. and notes.
