Angus Colin Johnson was born in Ballarat, Victoria on 14 January 1920. Living in Mount Doran, Victoria he enlisted at Royal Park, Victoria on 28 May 1941. Serving in the 2/23rd Australian Infantry Battalion, he was discharged on 14 November 1945. He later served in the Royal Australian Engineers.
