William Alfred Wallington Lankshear attained the degree of B.Sc. and the associateships: A.C.G.I., A.M.I.C.E. and A.I.Mech.E. He was granted a commission in the R.A.F.V.R. Administrative and Special Duties Branch as a Pilot Officer for the duration of hostilities on 6 September 1940. He transferred to the Technical Branch in February 1941 and was promoted to Flying Officer in September 1941. In July 1943 he was advanced to Temporary Flight Lieutenant and in August the same year he was confirmed in that rank. Admitted to the Freedom of the Worshipful Company of Turners, 27 May 1965 and granted the Livery on 6 October 1965.
