Sidney Norton was born in Cardiff on 23 March 1896. A Collier by occupation, employed at the Locketts Merthyr Colliery, he attested for the 12th Battalion Welsh Regiment at Ferndale on 14 January 1915, aged 19 years, 10 months. With the 2nd Battalion he served in France from 27 July 1915. He was wounded in action on 25 September 1915 and returned to England on 5 October. After making a recovery, he returned once more to France in April 1916 but was wounded for a second time on 9 June 1916, being invalided to England on 12 June. After treatment he was discharged as no longer fit on 14 January 1918, having latterly served with the Cheshire Regiment. After the war he worked at the Great Mountain Colliery.

With named card box of issue for the British War and Victory Medals; and original documents, including: discharge certificates (2); pension certificate; doctor’s letter, 2 February 1936 re. investigation for lung disease; Amalgamated Anthracite Collieries Ltd. Great Mountain Colliery pay envelope (2) dated 1934; notebook; newspaper cutting reporting his death. Also with copied service papers, census extracts and m.i.c.

Thomas Henry Norton, believed to be the father of the above, was born in 1869 in Cowes, Isle of Wight. Served in the Pilotage Service.
