Councillor William Walton, aged 38 years, of 4 Trent Dale, Leadgate, was awarded the B.E.M. in the Coronation Honours List of 1953 for services to the coal, industry. Walton was born in Villa Real, Durham, became a member of the Consett U.D.C. in 1946, and at the time of the award, had been Secretary of the Medomsley Miners’ Lodge for 11 years and Checkweighman for 9 years. As Councillor, he was Chairman of the Traffic and Safety First Committee; Chairman of the N.W. Divisional Educational Executive and Member of the N.W. Durham, Hospitals Management Committee.
