Joseph Tobbell enlisted on 31 August 1914 and as a Private in the 10th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, entered France on 25 August 1915. He was awarded the M.M. for ‘good work done in Scotts Redoubt, 6-10 July 1916’. In November 1917 the battalion was transferred to Italy. Tobbell was discharged on 26 March 1919 and awarded the Silver War Badge in addition to his 1914-15 Star trio of service medals.
