D.C.M. London Gazette 30 October 1918. ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This NCO took out a party of four men from his post and attacked the enemy who were bombing a neighbouring post, and had wounded most of the garrison. He drove them off, capturing an enemy NCO. His initiative and courage prevented the enemy from regaining a footing in our newly captured line.’
Private Samuel was born in Pendleton, Old Trafford, Manchester. Serving with the 1/7th Battalion Manchester Regiment, he landed on V Beach, Helles on 5 May 1915 and moved on to the area of the Krithia Bridge. From 5 May until 10 December when the battalion was relieved it suffered 7 officers killed, 13 wounded and 157 other ranks killed and 396 wounded and 91 missing. The battalion landed in France in March 1917 and it was here that Lockett earned the D.C.M. He died of wounds on 27 September 1918 and was buried in the Bertincourt Chateau Cemetery.
