British War Medal 1914-20 (40025 Pte. H. Smith, Linc. R.), very fine £30-50

Harry Smith, a resident of West Keal, Lincolnshire, enlisted at Grimsby and died of wounds on 22 April 1917, while serving in the 8th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment - he had been evacuated to the U.K. via No. 1 Casualty Clearing Station in early February.

Buried at West Keal (St. Helen) Churchyard in Spilsby Road, Lincoln, his gravestone is also inscribed to the memory of Private J. T. Smith, who was killed in action as a member of the 5th Battalion on 20 April 1917, and Private J. W. Smith, who suffered a similar fate while serving in the 1st Battalion on 29 September 1918. All three, clearly brothers or close relatives, are also commemorated on the War Memorial at West Keal.

Sold with photographs of the recipient’s gravestone and brief research.
