Major Wilmot Burrows Edward Ellis, subsequent to the fall of Sebastopol, served in the Crimea from early October 1855, until the evacuation in June 1856, and was employed in the destruction of the Docks of Sebastopol. Commanded a detachment of Royal Artillery from the 16th November 1858 to the 16th March 1859 with the Berar Field Force, and was employed to destroy by mines one of the strongholds of the Rohillas in the Deccan. Served throughout the Abyssinian campaign from the 13th December 1867, first in a Field Battery of which he brought most of the horses from India to Zoola, but becoming Supernumary was subsequently employed as Provost Marshal and in the Land Transport Train. Commanded a Division of the Train in the Highlands of Abyssinia for several months. Held command of the Train at Sooroo and at Addigerat, two important posts on the line of communication to Magdala. For these services he was mentioned in despatches and received the medal. Major Ellis died at Attock, East Indies, on 22 June 1880.
