Thomas Carey was born in Dublin c.1826 and enlisted into the 88th Regiment (Connaught Rangers) on 3 July 1840. With them he served in the West Indies, 2 years, 4 months; North America, 1 year 1 month; and in the Crimea, just under two years. Being wounded by a musket ball in the left foot on 8 September 1855 during the final assault on Sebastopol, he was discharged, being unfit for further service on 17 June 1856.
