John Crotty was born at Cloughton, Co. Cork, in 1838. He served with the 2nd Waikato Regiment, from September 1863 to May 1865, and afterward the 4th Waikato Regiment until March 1866, before joining the 1st Waikato Regiment in September 1866. He was present at the action at Ta Akeake on 4 February 1867, during the Tauranga campaign, and later joined the Waiuku Rifle Volunteers in 1869. His medal was issued in December 1873.
