1st Bengal Light Cavalry Portrait Miniature c. 1828, a rectangular depiction on ivory, 9.7 x 8 cms, the sitter is shown with his left arm tucked inside his elaborate uniform, this is mid blue with scarlet or crimson facings and a multitude of silver lace and buttons on the cuirass shaped front, the cuff is also elaborately decorated in silver lace above the coloured section. His waist belt is of gold lace with central white or pale blue band. The reverse has an ink inscription G.P.Ricketts Bengal Cavalry, also a printed label ‘From Robert Dunthorne’ the Rembrandt Gallery 28 Castle St., Liverpool and 5 Vigo St., London, this also as a faint ink inscription ‘George Poyntz Ricketts 1st Bengal Cavalry’ the whole contained in a gilt wood frame, good condition £500-700

Note: Sold together with a photostat extract giving full details of Ricketts’s career indicating that he served throughout the 1st Afhan War, the 1st Sikh War and the 2nd Sikh War.
