James Ernest Spencer was born and lived in Ware, Hertfordshire and enlisted at Hertford. Serving in the 2nd Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, he was killed in action, France/Flanders, on 26 March 1918, aged 27 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial. He was the son of James Henry and Annie Spencer, of 11 Musley Lane, Ware, Herts and husband of Constance Louise Afford (formerly Spencer), of The Cottage, Westlea, Wormley, Herts.
