William Lister was born in Catcott, near Bridgewater, Somerset. A Police Constable by occupation, he attested for short service with the Imperial Yeomanry at Cardiff on 25 January 1901, aged 21 years, 9 months. Posted to the 1st (Wiltshire) Company, 1st Battalion Imperial Yeomanry, he served in South Africa, 1 March 1901-27 August 1902. He was discharged at Aldershot on 3 September 1902 at the termination of his engagement. With copied service papers.

Basil Powys Smith was born in Chilton, Sudbury, Suffolk. A Gentleman, aged 21 years, 9 months, he attested for short service with the Imperial Yeomanry at Trowbridge on 18 January 1900. He served in South Africa with the 1st (Wiltshire) Company Imperial Yeomanry, 28 February-18 December 1900. He was discharged at his own request at Shorncliffe on 19 February 1901. Clasps confirmed. With copied service papers.
