Arthur Enset Oxley was born in Bow, London. Employed as a Sorter with the G.P.O., he attested for short service with the Imperial Yeomanry at Trowbridge on 9 January 1900, aged 26 years, 6 months. With the 63rd (Wiltshire) Company 16th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry he served in South Africa, 4 March 1900-17 June 1901. He was discharged at his own request at Chippenham on 24 June 1901. With copied service papers.
