George Furnell was born in Dinton, Wiltshire. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment, he attested for the Coldstream Guards at Devizes on 19 November 1898. With them he served in Gibraltar, March-November 1899 and South Africa, February 1900-September 1902. He was discharged medically unfit on 17 January 1903. Between the wars he was employed as a Postman. In the Great War, serving in the 1st Battalion Wiltshire Regiment, he was killed in action, France/Flanders, on 25 September 1915. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. His name is also commemorated on the Dinton Parish War Memorial and the Baverstock Parish Roll of Honour. With copied militia and regular army service papers and other research. It is believed Charles Furnell was his younger brother.
