Frederick Paynton was born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Trowbridge, on 2 April 1889, aged 18 years, 7 months. He transferred to the Wiltshire Regiment on 11 April 1889. With the regiment he served in India, January 1891-March 1897. Transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1897, he was recalled to the Colours in December 1899 and served with the 2nd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment in South Africa, December 1899-April 1902. He was discharged on 11 April 1904. With copied service papers.
