D.F.M. London Gazette 9 November 1943.

“On the night of the 8th October, 1943, this N.C.O. was detailed as Captain of Halifax aircraft to attack Hanover. On the outskirts of the target area they were attacked from below by a JU-88. This aircraft was spotted by the Rear Gunner a split second before it opened fire and both aircraft opened fire simultaneously. The JU-88 was shot down in flames and seen to hit the ground, and the Halifax was riddled with bullet and cannon shell holes. For instance about 3 feet was shot out of the port elevator, while the rear turret and wings were covered with holes.

Immediately afterwards they were coned by some 20 searchlights and took the necessary avoiding action. In spite of this and the damage done to the aircraft controls, they continued with a steady and accurate bombing run and bombed their target and obtained a good night photograph. Although both tyres had been holed this N.C.O. landed his aircraft without further damage and displayed considerable skill in preventing a serious accident. For his coolness in face of danger, determination in pressing home his attack and skill in bringing his damaged aircraft back to Base, he is most strongly recommended for the immediate award of the Distinguished Flying Medal.”
