Douglas Lancelot Wright was born in Douglas, Isle of Man, on 13 January 1912, and joined the Merchant Navy in 1928 as an apprentice to the Dawson Shipping Company, of Glasgow. During the war he served aboard the following merchant vessels: Losada, Reina del Pacifico, Oronsay, Orontes, Orion, and Otranto.
