J. Robinson was almost certainly working in Dundee at the time of the formation of the Town Guard, for which unit he immediately volunteered his services, and with whom he was present at their first engagement at Talana Hill. After this battle, when the British forces evacuated Dundee, the Town Guard was disbanded. Robinson then served with the Imperial Light Infantry through to the Relief of Ladysmith, and probably including the action at Spion Kop, in which action the Imperial Light Infantry were significantly involved. After the Natal campaign Robinson enlisted his services with Steinaecker’s Horse. On 16 April 1902 he was one of a small mounted force under Captain Blame, 1st K.F.S., who fell into a cleverly arranged ambuscade which resulted in a loss of 6 killed, 1 officer and 11 men wounded, and 30 taken prisoner, including Robinson, who was subsequently released.
