Distinguished Service Order, V.R., in silver-gilt and enamels, the base of lower arm neatly engraved ‘H.A.N.F.15th’, the top brooch bar a tailors copy, some chipping to central wreaths, otherwise nearly extremely fine £500-600

Herbert Augustus Nourse Forte was born in 1868 and, after education at Eton and Sandhurst, was gazetted into the East Yorkshire Regiment in 1889, being promoted Lieutenant in 1893 and Captain in 1899. Served in South Africa with the Mounted Infantry, was mentioned in despatches
London Gazette 11 September 1901 and created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order the same month. Presented with his insignia by the King on 18 December 1902, he retired from the Army in 1907 but was recalled for service in the Great War with the Reserve of Officers as a Major (from January 1916).
