Arthur Brine was born at Tunbridge on 16 October 1856, and received a direct commission from Army Candidates, as Lieutenant, R.M.L.I., on 1 February 1877. He served with the Royal Marine Battalion defending Suakin and was engaged in the operations in the Eastern Soudan, 1884-85. He was present at the actions at Hasheen, 20 March 1885; attack on Sir J. McNeill’s zareba, Tofrek, 22 March; the attack of the square of Guards and Marines, 24 March, and at the taking and burning of Tamaai, 3 April 1885. He was invalided home in 1885 and, in September 1887, promoted to Captain. He resigned his commission the following year and died at Torquay on 23 July 1937, aged 80. Sold with copy service record.
