John Whiteford was appointed Ensign in the 6th West India Regiment in August 1804, became Lieutenant in December 1804, and transferred to the 15th Light Dragoons in April 1805. He served with the 15th Light Dragoons in the Corunna campaign of 1808-09, including the cavalry action at Sahagun, and was promoted to Captain in July 1811. He served in France from 15 March 1814 and was present at the battle of Toulouse. At Waterloo, he was wounded in one of the many charges made by General Grant’s 5th Cavalry Brigade against the French left flank. Promoted to Major on 16 June 1820, he retired by the sale of his commission on 11 July 1822.
