William Failes served with 2 Troop 1st Brigade, Bengal Horse Artillery, until his death in hospital at Lucknow on 9 May 1858. Two officers of the Troop, Tombs and Hills, won the Victoria Cross in July 1857, and the unit was subsequently awarded the Honour Title “Tombs’s Troop”.
