Brazil, Maria I and Peter III, 6,400 Réis, 1784r, Rio, obv. countermarked with raised g within a dentilated circular indent, 14.27g/220.2 gr/9.17 dwt (Gordon 217). Coin very fine, countermark better £600-800

Provenance: E. Roehrs Collection, Part II, DNW Auction 96, 17 November 2011, lot 604 [from R.C. Gordon].

Zay attributed this countermark to a Guadeloupe decree of April 1803, but he was in error as that order concerned false plugs in circulating joes. Further research is required, but Gordon offers the possibility that this mark is a modern concoction and the cataloguer would concur
