Medals, Jamaica, Institute of Jamaica, Musgrave Medal, a silver award by A. Toft for A. Fenwick, bust of Sir Anthony Musgrave, rev. legend in wreath, edge named (May Soohih, 1970, Encouragement of Dance), hallmarked Birmingham 1965, 49mm (cf. Roehrs 1569). Mint state £80-100

Provenance: Bt Baldwin 1994.

May Soohih,
née Phang (1894-1971), was born in Kingston and after being educated in England she went to China. She spent 20 years there and met and married a Russian dancer, Anatoly Ivanoviv. In 1947 the couple returned to Jamaica and established the Soohih School of Dance. Following Anatoly’s death in 1950 she ran the school up to the time of her own death in a car crash
