In 1899 Hubert Ashton Laselve Simpson, OBE (†1938) was the first black Jamaican elected to the Legislative Council. He was a founding member of the National Club in 1909, which was restricted to those born in Jamaica who wished to see the island progress towards far greater autonomy.
