Medals, Jamaica, Abolition of Negro Apprenticeships in Jamaica, 1838, a copper medal by J. Davis and B.R. Haydon, bust of William Knibb three-quarters right, rev. legend in 11 lines, 52mm (BHM 1877; E –; Roehrs –). Good very fine and extremely rare £400-600

Provenance: Bt Spink.

Following the death of his brother Thomas, William Knibb (1803-45) volunteered to replace him as a missionary-schoolmaster in Jamaica. He was aged 21 and left England in October 1824, just two days after his marriage. In 1830 he became the minister responsible for the baptist church at Falmouth and remained there as minister until his death
