Provenance: Bt R. Margolis.

The medal names General Sir Lionel Smith, Bt, GCB, GCH (1778-1842), diplomat, colonial administrator and soldier. He was governor of Tobago (1833), of Barbados, viceroy of the Windward Islands and Grenada (1833-6), and Jamaica (1836-9). Smith read the Proclamation of Freedom to a crowd estimated to be 8,000 which had gathered in the main square of Spanish Town, Jamaica. He was governor of Mauritius, 1840-2. Also named is the Rt Revd William Hart Coleridge (1789-1849), bishop of Barbados and the Leeward Islands, 1824-42
