A good Second War D.F.M. awarded to Pilot Officer H. Rankin, No. 61 (Hull’s Own) Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, killed in 1944

Distinguished Flying Medal
, G.VI.R. (982667 Sgt., R.A.F.) some minor edge bruising, otherwise good very fine £600-800

D.F.M. London Gazette 17 August 1943. The recommendation states ‘Sergeant Rankin has completed many successful sorties. In March he accomplished a very large number of operational flying hours when his attacks included such distant targets as Spezia and Berlin. On one occasion, his skilful commentary enabled his pilot to avoid two enemy night fighters. His vigilance has always inspired confidence in his captain and he has never wavered in the face of the strongest anti-aircraft fire. This airman’s courage and steadiness in the face of danger has been most praiseworthy.’

Herbert Rankin, a native of Dublin, Ireland, was subsequently promoted to the rank of Pilot Officer (Air Gunner). He was killed on 25 February 1944, whilst serving with No. 61 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, and is buried in Choloy War Cemetery, France. Sold with photocopied pages from his Observers and Air Gunners Flying Log Book and a copied photograph of recipient in uniform.
