M.I.D. London Gazette 29 July 1902. Lord Kitchener’s despatch of 23 June 1902: Rev. R. T. Gardner, Acting Church of England Chaplain, Army Chaplain’s Department.

Richard Titley Gardner, M.A. Emmanuel College, Cambridge and Wells; Curate of Pershore, Worcs. 1886-8; Rector of Pittsworth, Darling Down, Queensland 1888-92, and of Blackall, Queensland 1892-93; Chaplain to Bishop of Rockhampton 1892-95; Commissary to Bishop of Guiana 1895-1910; Vicar of Pilling, Garstang, Lancs. 1893-97; Acting Chaplain to H.M. Forces in South Africa 1900-02; Hon. Sec. Central Board of Missionaries from 1908.

Sold with a copy of the recommendation for reward from the Senior Chaplain to the Forces in South Africa, dated 6 June 1902, which states: ‘Revd. R. T. Gardner (Acting Chaplain). The Acting Chaplains have been the bulk of our Department. Wherever Mr Gardner has been placed he has won the highest commendations from all ranks. He is earnest, tactful, socially most agreeable, and has spent considerable private means in carrying out his public service. I cannot speak too highly. He served in S. Africa since June 1900. No previous recognition. In my opinion the best man we have had of any kind.’
