Two officers and 37 other ranks of the 2nd Dragoons were present at Abu Klea in the Heavy Camel Regiment.

William Smith was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in July 1869. He enlisted into the 2nd Dragoons on 17 November 1877, being discharged on 14 November 1889 on completion of his first period of limited engagement. Sold with confirmation and seven pages of copied service papers, which note that he was ‘employed as an officers servant.’
